           A Long Beach Morning and a Lesson in Leadership

           This past Memorial Day weekend, I found myself two days into a camping trip at Long Beach, Washington, with my wife and our four-year-old. Despite the change of scenery and being away from the usual daily grind, the stress of work still clung to me like damp ocean fog. My mind kept drifting to unfinished tasks and unanswered emails, and I started to wonder if the break would do any good at all.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Then, early on the third day, something shifted. I woke up before everyone else and stepped outside camper, wrapped in my trusty flannel coat against the morning chill. The sky was just beginning to lighten, casting soft pastels between the coastal clouds. The air carried the scent of salt and pine, and the only sounds were the breeze stirring through the tall grass and the rhythmic chorus of birds greeting the dawn. That moment—watching the sun rise, entirely present in the stillness—was when I finally felt it: release. The kind of mental exhale that no to-do list or caffeine boost can provide.

           “How Leaders Can Utilize Micro-Vacations to Their Advantage.”
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            It felt like the universe had queued it up just for me. The article emphasized how even brief breaks—when done with intentional disconnection—can lower stress, improve decision-making, and ignite creativity. The part that stuck with me most? You don’t need a week-long retreat in the Alps. Sometimes, two or three days in the woods—or by the coast, with sand in your shoes and a hot drink in your hand—can be enough to reset your brain.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           That’s the magic of nature for me. It’s not just a change of scenery; it’s a full reset. No buzz of notifications. No blinking taskbar. Just the tactile, sensory pull of the outdoors reminding me to be rather than do.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            ﻿
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
      
           What I’ve learned is that it’s not about waiting for the perfect time to unplug. It’s about choosing to build these micro-vacations into life—intentionally and regularly. Whether it’s a long weekend in the wild or a single day off the grid, the impact on your focus, clarity, and peace of mind is undeniable.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;

           So here’s my nudge to you: When’s your next micro-vacation? What space can you carve out—next weekend, maybe even next month—where you can truly disconnect and let nature do its work?

           Applying NLP to Project Management

           In project management, effective communication can make or break a project. One of the most powerful insights from the session was how NLP techniques, particularly The Milton Model, can enhance how we lead and engage teams. This model, named after hypnotherapist Dr. Milton Erickson, uses ambiguous language deliberately to foster creativity, collaboration, and proactive problem-solving within teams.

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

That’s where Scrumban came in and turned our chaotic workflow into a more streamlined process. It wasn’t just a tweak in our methods; it was a complete mindset shift. And the results? A 120% increase in output, smoother communication, higher-quality code, and faster product delivery.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

Like most teams, we had flirted with Agile Sprints before, but fully committing required us to rethink how we tackled projects. Instead of rigid deadlines and sprawling task lists, we embraced shorter, fixed cycles that allowed us to stay dynamic and adjust on the fly. That’s when Time Boxed Task Management became the Scrumban process that reshaped how we worked.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

           The journey started by redefining how we viewed deadlines. Gone were the days of endless timelines. In their place, we set up two-week sprints—time-boxed periods where we focused on specific, high-priority tasks. This gave us the structure to plan but also the flexibility to shift gears if needed.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Daily Stand-ups became our quick pit stops—short, focused meetings where we’d share progress, discuss any blockers, and keep everyone in sync.

      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Sprint Review helped us take stock of what we accomplished, ensuring the quality of our work met the standards we set.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            But the real magic happened in the Retrospectives. This was our space to reflect—what worked, what didn’t, and how we could improve in the next sprint.

      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/ul&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The Scrumban approach did more than just change our task management—it revolutionized it. Time-boxing tasks brought focus, eliminating wasted effort. We stopped chasing too many goals at once and zeroed in on what mattered most. Our communication went from disjointed to fluid, thanks to the daily check-ins that kept us aligned. And the quality of our code? Through the roof. With regular reviews and adjustments, we weren’t just meeting deadlines; we were consistently delivering better products.

           Over the past few years, I found myself in conference rooms with my team, facing yet another challenge: an insurmountable project deadline, a change to team structures affecting pay and seniority, or some other cortisol-releasing high-stress situation. The atmosphere was tense, filled with the silent hum of laptops and the occasional frustrated sigh. It was in that moment I realized that the emotional climate of the team was on the brink of collapse, and something had to change.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Creating a positive emotional climate within a team isn't just about smiles and high-fives. It's about fostering an environment where everyone feels valued, supported, and motivated to contribute their best. It's the foundation upon which trust, collaboration, and productivity are built.

Working with remote and hybrid teams, I found we still needed to include ‘watercooler talk.’ The five to ten minutes spent catching up with people, asking about families, events, and weekend festivities led to greater team cohesion and trust.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

By taking the time to listen, I learned more about what motivated each person and how I could better support them. To show commitment to their goals, I linked company and department goals to personal goals. This tends to lead to win-win scenarios for both the company and the team member.

           Transparency played a crucial role as well. When facing setbacks or difficult decisions, I made sure to communicate openly and honestly with the team. Some have said that my level of transparency and honesty with the team is sometimes more than necessary but sharing the reasons behind certain choices and acknowledging the challenges we faced, helped build trust and fostered a sense of shared responsibility.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           To overcome the monotony of working long hours with intense focus and to keep spirits high, we introduced "stress busters" – short breaks where we’d engage in fun activities like quick games of hangman, team trivia, or even just a walk outside (I call these leadership loops). These moments of levity helped release tension and reminded us that we were in it together.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
